AUDI AG is one of Germany’s oldest automobile manufacturers whose cars are very popular in the world. In USA, its slogan is ‘Truth in Engineering’ and this brand name has clearly caught the American fancy with its advanced technical developments, great styling and a superb performance. AUDI AG is the result of the amalgamation and the resultant expertise of four independent motor-vehicle manufacturers and its symbols with the four circles is a representation of the same. The name AUDI came from the clever son of Mr. Franz Fikentscher who was a close business friend of Mr. August Horch, the founder of AUDI AG.

Mr. August Horch had initially established the automobile company Wanderer, but had to leave the company due to differences with the supervisory board. Later he established another automobile company with the name Horch Automobil-Werke GmbH, but unfortunately was forced to leave the company he founded. Mr. Horch had a never say die attitude and he was confident of establishing yet another automobile company. This time though, he could not use his own family name ‘Horch’ due to a legal problem of Trade Mark infringement with the previous company Horch Automobil-Werke GmbH. Left with no choice but to give a new name for an automobile company that Horch wanted to start, he and his business friends discussed the same at the apartment of his business friend Mr. Franz Fikentscher.

After hearing the ensuing discussion, Mr. Franz’s son who was studying Latin in a corner of the room, suggested to his father that they could use the name ‘AUDI’ which has the same meaning as the word ‘Horch’ in German which means to ‘hark’ or ‘hear’ in English and ‘audi’ in Latin!

In 1932, a significantly beneficial development took place for AUDI which merged with Horch, DKW, and Wanderer, to form Auto Union. This Auto Union later merged with NSU and simply shortened its name to AUDI AG in 1985.
